Pigmentation and sun protection: the basics
Why pigmentation returns and how daily sun protection keeps results.
Sun is the most common trigger that worsens melasma, tan and dark spots. Even the best treatment will fade if the skin is left unprotected.
A simple daily routine
- Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) every morning, indoors and outdoors
- Reapply every 2 to 3 hours if you are outside
- Wear a hat or use an umbrella in strong sun
- Use only creams prescribed or advised by your dermatologist
Be patient
Pigmentation improves slowly over weeks to months. A dermatologist will identify the type and combine medicines, peels or laser with a sun-protection plan.
Avoid unsupervised skin-lightening creams. Some contain steroids or mercury and can cause lasting damage.
