Hair fall: when to see a dermatologist
How much hair fall is normal, common causes, and signs that need a proper check.
Most people lose 50 to 100 hairs a day. Extra shedding, a widening parting or a receding hairline are signs worth checking.
Common causes
- Pattern hair loss, which runs in families
- Stress, fever or illness in the last 3 to 6 months
- Low iron, vitamin D or B12, and thyroid problems
- PCOS and hormonal changes
- Dandruff or other scalp conditions
- Patchy loss from alopecia areata
See a dermatologist if
- Hair fall lasts more than 2 to 3 months
- You notice thinning at the crown or temples
- Round bald patches appear
- Your scalp is itchy, scaly or painful
Hair treatment works slowly, and starting early protects more of your existing hair. A short consultation can find the cause and set a clear plan.
