Acne scars: what actually works

A dermatologist's plain guide to acne scar types and the treatments that help each one.

By Dr. Arihant Surana · · 4 min read

Acne scars are not all the same, and that is why one treatment does not suit everyone. Before choosing a treatment, a dermatologist first identifies the scar type.

The main scar types

  • Rolling scars: wide, shallow dips with soft edges
  • Boxcar scars: sharp-edged, round or oval depressions
  • Ice-pick scars: narrow, deep pits
  • Raised scars: firm, thick scars, more common on the chest and jawline

What helps

Fractional CO2 laser stimulates collagen and is one of the most effective options for many scar types. Chemical peels, dermaroller and fillers can be added for specific scars. Deep ice-pick scars often need targeted procedures.

Treat active acne first

Scar treatment works best once new acne is under control. Untreated active acne keeps creating new scars, and it is the most effective place to start.
